The proposed change would allow fibre-optic cable in the Marine Conservation zone beside Valdes Island, where the cable would cross the foreshore before reaching reserve land; the Thetis Island Local Trust Committee asked staff to prepare a draft bylaw and expedite the application. [1]

The committee also decided a public hearing was not required for the proposed bylaw and asked staff to proceed with public notification. [1]

Lyackson First Nation Consultations Coordinator Karyn Scott told the committee the Nation wanted to participate in decision-making from the outset rather than only through a referral. [1]

Trustees apologized for the lack of earlier communication and for not working within the protocol agreement with Lyackson First Nation; the committee asked staff to inquire whether the Nation was interested in council-to-council or staff-to-staff meetings under that agreement. [1]

Scott said Lyackson supported expediting the application and did not require a formal referral or have further comments. [1]
