Thetis Island’s Local Trust Committee voted to proceed no further with Abrupt Shellfish Inc.’s rezoning application for marine aquaculture near Crescent Point, citing inconsistency with the island’s Official Community Plan and Islands Trust Policy Statement, incompatibility with adjacent land and recreational uses, and potential risk to a sensitive ecosystem.[1]
The committee also asked staff and the chair to forward a letter and supporting material to the ministry responsible for issuing the lease.[1] In the meeting recording, Trustee Peter Luckham read a draft letter asking the ministry to respect the committee’s decision and cancel the permit; the committee then voted to send the letter.[2]
Planner Marlis McCargar told the committee that staff had received 29 pieces of correspondence opposing the application and none supporting it.[2] The minutes say the applicant attended and was given an opportunity to speak, but declined.[1]
The committee also advanced proposed bylaws to add zoning and land-use designations to an unzoned marine area, giving the bylaws first and second readings and directing staff to arrange an electronic community information meeting and public hearing.[1]
